The Term Vlach in Historical Discography (2024)

Ordoulidis, Nikos, 2024. O oros "vlachiko" stin istoriki diskografia [The Term “Vlach” in Historical Discography]. In V. Nitsiakos, K. Ntinas and N. Siokis, (Eds.) The Vlachs of Greece – Identities and Diversities in Place and in Time (pp. 213–236). Scientific Association for the Study of Vlach Culture (in Greek, online here).

Research in the archives of 78 rpm records allowed the detection of recordings, where one can read the term “vlachiko”, as well as other cognate words. These terms can be read on the record labels themselves. The cases in question surprise us in terms of the implementation from the side of the musicians and singers that participated in, and especially as regards instrumentation, performance practices, and cultural background from which the protagonists derive from. These recordings concern both the Greek speaking world and others with which a historical dynamic relation has already been validated; both in historical discography and in other aspects of the societies in question. This text presents some of these findings, as an initial approach and effort to understand the terms and their connotations within the world of the musicians and the music industry during its early stages.
