Annual Conference: Effects and Interactions

Athens, 25-27 November 2016

Round Table Topic:

Scholarly and popular intertexts in modern Greek music

Case study: The ‘Six popular pictures’ by Manos Hadjidakis

This round table includes a sequence of proposals and discussions which will elaborate on the overview of expression, ideas, rhetorics and mentalities which relate to the integration of the ‘popular’ into music creation. The ‘Six popular pictures’ by Manos Hadjidakis are to constitute a paradigmatic threshold for the consideration. In this context, issues are raised; regarding terminology (scholarly, artistic, popular etc.), issues regarding aesthetic definition of Greekness, as well as issues which refer to music creation per se (instrumentation-orchestration, form, modality, harmony, rhythmic composition etc.)  The central axis is the intertextual relationship between the scholarly and the popular, as they are shaped after the generation of the 1930s, with the main vector being urban popular music.
