THE EASTERN PIANO PROJECT (2012)

The piano, as a musical instrument, exists on music stages as well as in the discography of the rembétiko and laikó [urban-popular] musical styles in Greece for many years. The names of some pianists of this particular repertoire have been connected with this instrument, leaving behind recorded material of great musical value. However, I have never found any publication (academic or not) concerning this large as well as important subject, that is, the role of the piano within rembétiko music. Its main objectives are twofold: a) to show what techniques can transform this instrument from an accompanying or a semi-accompanying to a soloist instrument, and b) to show various accompanying techniques and generally the role of the piano within an Eastern popular orchestra.
